Here’s the thing about Meditation: It’s phenomenal and I SUCK AT IT!!
Believe it or not, I do like to break a mental sweat. Filled with general curiosity, I pound through troves of literature to flood my grey matter with as much knowledge as possible. With a business background, the majority of my reads are in Finance, Sales, Leadership and of course: Rock Star Biographies.
While flexin’ out some tome reps back in 2016, I stumbled across multiple instances regarding the routines of business leaders, influencers and eccentric millionaires. A main commonality was their devotion to a daily exercise and meditation regimen. So I figured what the hell, I’ll give it an Ernest P. Worrell.
Like my other tasks at hand, I struggle with the consistency of meditation. I’ve logged 12 hours so far, which sounds pretty good. If you get down to brass tax though, I started two years ago and that averages out to a whopping 59 seconds per day…not too impressive. I have made great strides to bundle this into my new daily schedule over the past few weeks. HEALTHY MIND/HEALTHY BODY
Out of a 15-minute session, it is safe to say I get a good 2 to 3 minutes of actual meditation. For the other 12 or so, I am rocketing uncontrollably through my consciousness like Chris Farley in Beverley Hills Ninja.
I’ve acquired a few calming visualization techniques to help. For example, I am good at sitting on the beach focused on the soothing roll of the ocean…for a short period. Then, a perfect storm rolls in and I bear witness to Marky Mark’s Beard capsizing in a rogue-wave-battered fishing vessel. This is always followed by a Tsunami charging full steam ahead with my private beach in its path. Next, I can successfully bring breathing focus into my 3rd eye. Then, upon realizing it’s blind, I pop off a verse or two from the late 90’s tune “Semi-Charmed Life.” I constantly cycle through these scenarios but get passed them a lil quicker with each effort. Funny how distracting the mind can be at all times. Conversely, as with everything else in life: Practice Makes Perfect.
So what can possibly be so bad about setting aside a few minutes each day to just sit there and breathe? Absolutely nothing. Even with my brief exposure to actual meditation, each time I am left Relaxed, Rejuvenated and ready to take on The Grind. The entire day is focused on jobs, deadlines and everything/everyone else. Be selfish for a small fraction and reclaim your slice!!
I highly recommend starting now, why wait? Even if you only get a good 120 seconds per sesh like me, it can help ease your Sunday Night Anxieties. Who knows- it might even contribute to a better night’s sleep. Then try it again first thing in the morning to get fired up for the day.
For starters, download a guided mediation app.
I am a fan of Headspace and have recommended it to friends and family already. Despite my massive following of 14 subscribers to date, Headspace is not paying me to promote their product. I really do like it. Test it out to see if you dig it.
